    Monkey Cake

    By Stacy 6 Comments

I used to have another blog all about birthday parties. But then this blog took off and then the domain of the birthday blog was stolen so I shut it down. And I decided to transfer the cake tutorials posts here :)

    The Monkey Cake

My baby turned one today! It is hard to believe. We call him our little monkey so I made him a monkey cake. I painted a monkey on his bedroom wall and so I matched the cake to that.

I think they are pretty close :)

I started with 2 cupcakes and one round cake. After they cooled I put them in the freezer. Cakes are easier to carve if they are firm.

I cut small semi-circles out of the cupcakes so they would fig snugly against the "head". I cut triangles out of the round cake to give him some cheeks.

After that I crumb coated it all in the dark chocolate frosting and put it back in the freezer. When the crumb coat has firmed up I frost the final layer of frosting. The cake is so cold that it makes the frosting almost hard. It makes it easy to smooth it out. For the detail I put frosting in a plastic sandwich bag and cut the corner off. I just squeezed and decorated.

My little guy wasn't quite sure what to think about it!

      Hi there,

I love your cake, it is so cute! Do you know what type of icing you used, as I am trying to collect the ingredients to make this cake for my nephew and can't seem to find a lighter brown like you have in the picture. Also, what did you use for the cute hair on the top of his head? thanks!

I am not the blogger of this site, but I can answer one if your questions. So, I made this today, and with the color problem, make homemade chocolate frosting. The less cocoa powder you put in, the lighter the brown color will be. Once you are done with the light brown, put more cocoa in, and make it a darker brown.

For the cute little hair, I froze some of my dark frosting, putting it on parchment paper, then took it out a little later.

        Hope that helped!

      Hi

I love this cake and am keen on a monkey theme for my little boy's 1st as well. Can you explain what the following means please:
After that I crumb coated it all in the dark chocolate frosting and put it back in the freezer.

What is crumb coated please? Also, how did you get the lighter brown colour frosting? Im new to colour frosting and decorating past putting a few things on top of a cake!

      Thank you!

I am not the blogger of this site, but I cak answer one if your questions. A crumb coat is a very thin coat of frosting to just keep all of the crumbs away for when you do the final frost.

I made this today, and with the color problem, make homemade chocolate frosting. The less cocoa powder you put in, the lighter the brown color will be. Once you are done with the light brown, put more cocoa in, and make it a darker brown.

For the cure little hair, I froze some of my dark frosting, in the shadow I wanted, and took it out a little later.

        Hope that helped!
