    Adding Color to your Kitchen!

    By Stacy 259 Comments

I was challenged by Better Homes and Gardens (BHG at Walmart) to add some color to my home.  I just painted my dining area (and soon will paint the rest of the kitchen) a nice bright white. I painted the ceiling in a black and white checkerboard pattern instead of the old tone on tone green checkerboard pattern from before. With all this white I knew I this space needed color ASAP!  I went straight to mother nature because well, nature is amazing! And colorful :)

Make sure you don't miss the giveaway at the end of the post!

kitchen art you can do yourselfI took some pictures of fruit and vegetables because A) It is a kitchen and dining space so it makes sense B) Because you can find some amazing colors in nature and C) They are readily available. And I'll throw in another reason for you fellow gardeners. Loving gardening so much, it is fun to see your hard work turned into beautiful art.

I used some barn wood as a backdrop but I almost used white posterboard. You could use you kitchen table top, counters, the grass in your backyard, or anything flat that you think would make a pretty background. Since I am probably not going to hang the barn wood and mirror back up, I used barn wood so I still had the same feel.

Tips when photographing veggies and fruit:

*Natural light is your friend. Find a spot in your house where you can get good natural light and set up a table or something there where you can work. Make sure the light is not coming from one direction only leaving you with heavy shadows on one side while the other side it too bright. Angle it so the light it straight on. If you need to, use white poster board to redirect light or lessen the shadows. I set my camera on a timer so it gives me 10 seconds before it takes the picture. That way I have time to get in position with the poster board.

*Sometime they look better when they are wet. Rinse them under the sink first before arranging them. It brings out their color even more and makes them look more vibrant!

*Slice some of them in half! Citrus is almost a no brainer but lots of veggies look just as pretty on the inside and they do on the outside. Check out the artichoke for proof :)

*You don't need a super nice camera. I have framed images that I took with my cell phone (and not a nice cell phone either). If you are not happy with how they look straight out of the camera, find a free online photo editing tool and tweak them until you are happy with them.

I was tempted to use all the ripe blueberries but decided it would look more interesting if I had a variety of blue hues. I used some of the not so ripe ones and I love how it turned out!

I knew I wanted the pictures to be the star so I wanted simple frames. I adore these 11x14 frames from BHG and already had a few. I ordered 4 more for this project.

    BHG picture frame

I wasn't sure if 4 would be enough to fill the wall. I like it with 4 but I will probably add a couple more pictures. I will probably wait until my garden starts producing so some of the pictures can be things I have grown.

I recently just used posterboard to decorate our cabinet doors so I could print off some quotes and add color like red, yellow and orange. I also hang pictures and brightly colored shelves around our home. We live in military housing, so I have to add color any way I can that is inexpensive and tasteful.
