    Freshening up my porch!

    By Stacy 152 Comments

     ***This giveaway is now closed***

    THE WINNER IS Ellen Price!!!

When spring hits here I go full force outside for two reasons. One, because I have been cooped up all winter and I am dying to work outside. And two, after a long winter everything outside looks dirty and homely.

Take my side porch for example. Here is what it looked like last Summer:

    side-porch_edited-2-1024x699

And here are some close ups of what it looked like after a hard winter:

    dirty-porch

Scuff marks, dirt, water marks, more dirt. Pretty, huh?

I was lucky though because P&G sent me some new cleaners to test out. And you are lucky because you get to enter to win some :)

P&G-prize-packPrize includes: Mr. Clean Outdoor Pro Cleaner, Mr. Clean Outdoor Magic Erasers, and Bounty 2X paper towels PLUS a $50 Home Depot Gift Card :)

I used these products to freshen up my poor side porch. Actually used them all over my yard.

    Cleaning-with-Mr-Clean

Now before I forget, I am a dork. I didn't read the directions before using the cleaner. It clearly states to be careful when using on painted surfaces and to wipe off quickly. DOH! It actually didn't have any negative effects on the shoe cabinet that was spray painted shown here, but on my door it actually took the paint off. Not all the way off, but where it sat for a bit it came off on the Bounty paper towel. Dude, this stuff means business! Can you imagine what it would do to a nasty, greasy grill! We just bought our first grill and haven't even used it yet. But you can rest assured that the second it gets nasty I am using THIS.

I had some rust spots on out concrete and the magic eraser got it off. It also got off the white water marks on the metal railing. If we actually had patio furniture I bet it would have had it looking like new. :)

Okay, are you ready for my new and improved side porch? Here it is in all its sparkly glory!

    side-porch-red

The "Welcome" had faded off of the mat so I stenciled "hello" on there in yellow. I first tempted to use spray paint and a stencil and when that bled I stopped and then used a paint brush and acrylic paint.

    hello-mat

(I swear it is centered. Don't you have it when things look "off" in photos?)

    red-porch

    lemon-wreath

I added some lemons to my wreath. I would have loved to make the whole thing out of faux lemons but at almost $2 a pop I was happy with just a few :)

    clean-cement

My steps NEVER look this clean. The dirt gets into all the little dips, creases, etc. and is so hard to scrub off. Water puddles on the areas that are uneven an when it evaporates it leaves white water marks. They never come off either. I loved that the magic eraser totally took them off. LOVE!

    side porch

I change it up each year but I decided to go with a yellow and red scheme this year. I still have my front porch and driveway to share later. Thanks for letting me show my porch off. And good luck on the giveaway!

    Here is how you enter:

This giveaway is open to US and Canadian residents only that are 18 years or older. The winner is chosen by random.org. The winner will be announced on Monday June 10th, 2013. The winner must contact me within 48 hours or a new winner will be chosen.

I have a bunch of clutter on the front porch right now - bicycles, skateboards, etc. I need to put those in the shed, clean the space, and make it welcoming! I have a lovely teak rocker that needs to be wiped down and revived so that I can sit out and read!

I love the idea of your "hello" mat rather than the conventional "welcome"! So cute!

I was wondering did you paint your porch cement floor. What color is it and or paint used? I have been thinking about painting ours It is in bad shape. I am trying to find people who have. Yours is cute and neat. lovely blog.

I painted them because they were in such bad shape and had been painted in the past. I first did it with regular paint and it completely peeled off the first year. The I tried Behr concrete primer and concrete paint a few years ago. It works better! I do have a few spots the size of dimes that have started to some off. I think no matter what paint you use it will not last forever especially if it gets high traffic. Make sure you power wash the concrete first and follow the steps to a T. The top of the stairs landing on my side porch has been repainted since the three years, but it is because I use that landing to cut wood, spray paint items, and repot plants in the colder months.

Yes! It keeps them dry. I didn't paint the bottom of it so under it has rust spots in the painted cement. That is the only down side. But maybe you could set it on a rubber mat?

The area that most needs attention is our patio. It is made of bricks & my husband would like to take the bricks out & do either a deck or colored cement. It would be nice to not have to weed in between the bricks any more. Thank you for your giveaway & for motivation to clean the front porch. You did a beautiful job & I know it would only take a little effort to make it more welcoming.

It holds the kids' play shoes and our gardening shoes. All our regular shoes are stored inside. I just didn't want to have muddy shoes in the house. And since we don't have a back porch or a covered porch, I needed a place to store them so they would be out of sight and safe from the rain :)

We have cement stairs and a cement porch (with no railing). I love my house, but I loathe that porch and stairs. I feel they look ugly and dirty all of the time. I would really like to get rid of them completely but until then, they could really use a great clean. They get dirty so fast!

I have begun preparing my screened porch for our annual "opening day". Let me just say this is the LAST time I leave the cushions on the outdoor furniture during pollen season! I would love to seal it off completely, but until I figure out how to use my magical powers I can at least bring the cushions inside. What a mess!
