    Fireplace Makeover

    By Stacy 100 Comments

Phase one of my sister's basement is pretty close to being done and she will be ready to move things down there soon. Her basement being finished is what sparked all these projects at her house. Today I am sharing her fireplace makeover I finished up this week. Her dining, family room and kitchen are all one big space so when I painted her kitchen cabinets and refinished her dining room table, it made sense to spruce up the living area as well. This project was sponsored by HomeRight.

Her fireplace was pretty standard builder's grade and pretty boring. It was made of the same wood as her cabinets and I went through the same process the prep and to paint it. I love the color we chose and the easy fix we came up with for changing her orangey tile.

    Fireplace Makeover

The fireplace had even more knot holes than the cabinets and they were bigger and deeper. I almost went through a whole thing of wood putty filling them in. After the putty was dry, I sanded it smooth. I sanded the whole mantel area lightly with 150 grit and 220 grit sandpaper. This makes the surface have some texture for the paint to grip to verses a super slick, shiny surface.

prepping for paint by puttying holes

I taped, and taped and then added some tarps. I covered everything that I didn't want to get paint on it. The prep is always more work than the painting itself. The painting is a breeze! I used my Super Finish Max paint sprayer from HomeRight. *affiliate link

Paint is Mined Coal from Behr

I ended up doing three thin coats. The putty soaks up the paint more than the wood so a third coat was necessary to create an even finish.  Once it was dry. I removed the tarps and tape. I was going to be adding a faux cement tile but knew that some of the grout was going to show so I painted the grout lines the same dark gray.

    taped tile

My sister ordered some peel and stick faux tiles from etsy. They seem really durable and they were super easy to apply. If I didn't place in straight, it easily peeled back off for me to reposition. They offered custom sizes so we order 6"x 12" tiles. For the corners I just cut one in half.

The new paint and the faux tiles really made this look like a completely different fireplace!

Your sister’s fireplace turned out great. It looks like a 100% pro finish on your paint job. I’d paint some millwork.

I have entire rooms to paint and furniture to go with it.
I loved the before and the after even more. Wow see you have such a wonderful imagination. that is inspirational. I have a bed and table and a bedroom to paint. I also have the den and the office/bedroom to paint.

I'd tackle some of the outdoor furniture. See if I could revitalize it
