Major projects at my house are currently at a stand still so I was excited to makeover a friend's laundry room recently. I have missed getting my paint on! It is even more fun when you have a basic and blank slate to start with. Taralyn's laundry room looks like a lot of builder grade laundry rooms. It is just inside the garage door and also acts as a pathway into the rest of the house. It was the perfect candidate for my first ScotchBlue project this year!
It was functional to a point, but we can do better than "sort of functional". I pictured more storage and some sort of wow factor.
Paint, plywood, and some new storage containers were pretty much all it took! I spent less than $200 on everything including supplies. All the details are at the end of the post.
I think what makes this laundry room so fun and so, so different from a builder grade room, is the black wall. Do dark wall scare you? They shouldn't! It is easier than you think to get crisp lines. Here is how...
Note: Follow all ScotchBlue™ Painter’s Tape package instructions for proper surface cleaning and prep, adhesion and removal.
Supplies:
Scotch Blue™ PLATINUM Tape Painter’s Tape
White paint
Black paint
Foam brush
Paint roller
Paint tray
Nail hole filler
Putty knife
Soapy dishrag
Step 1:
Fill any nail holes with putty. Either use a damp rag to wipe away excess putty while the putty is still wet or wait for the putty to dry and sand it smooth. Wash the walls really well and let them dry.
Step 2:
Tape off any areas you do not want to get painted like outlets, baseboards and trim using ScotchBlue PLATINUM Painter’s Tape, which tears at a straight, 90-degree angle.
Step 3:
Paint along the tape edge using the base paint color to help seal the tape.
Step 4:
Paint your wall with your choice of color. I chose black!
Step 5:
Remove tape by pulling back on itself at a 45-degree angle away from the surface.
Even though the room is small and has little natural light, the dark wall does not make it feel smaller. I think it helps that there is so much white. The white bins are from IKEA as well as the black ones. They started out grey, but I spray painted them black just like I did for the ones in my home office. The striped tote (which I am going to buy some for myself!) is from The Container Store.
We also painted the other walls with a fresh coat of white.
I built the rolling laundry hamper out of plywood and stained it the same color as the floating shelves I made. Early American from Minwax is one of my go to stains.
I bought a laundry bag and tried to dye it black but it came out as eggplant purple. I bought some black fabric and had my awesome friends, Kara, sew a new one for me that fit like a glove! When you hate to sew and are on a tight deadline, it helps to have a friend who likes to sew :) I painted the Xs onto the bag.
I found some cute free printables. The black laundry care symbols one can be found HERE and the definition of laundry can be found HERE.
I am happy to say that I will have another room makeover at Taralyn's house to share with you soon as well as some other fun projects as part of my collaboration with ScotchBlue.

I soooo super love the black wall.
You killed it!!
How much is that length of wood for the shelves?
The shelves are 76" wide so I bought a 4 foot by 8 foot piece of plywood.
Wow, it turned out just beautiful. I never would have thought to paint a wall black, but it is gorgeous against the crisp white. Totally love it! And I want a striped tote too. So fun!
What is the name and brand of your black paint?
Glidden paint in Onyx Black :)
I never would think of painting a wall black but I LOVE this. Now I want to do it!
Beautiful laundry room! I love the dark wall! The contrast is beautiful. How cool that the tape tears at a 90* angle! That must make it so nice and easy to use!
I'm impressed you use tape - me I just wing it and use an angle brush and so far so good.
Love this the black it's a fantastic great contrast.
Wow. I think I'd actually enjoy doing the laundry if my laundry room looked like this! Fabulous. The black wall looks great.
You just keep outdoing your last project. This is a gorgeous make-over. Will you come to my house in Baltimore?? Keep the ideas coming. mickie
Love the black wall. When we redo our basement, I will use this idea behind my washer and dryer. What a lucky friend.
Is that a hamper in btwn the washer and dryer? Where does she put laundry detergent and bleach? The space looks nice, but a little more functionality would have been better.
She has a rolling cart across from the dryer. I'm actually doing a part 2 of the makeover and decorating that area. I already painted a rug for it in a previous post. But she also could put the soap and things in the bins, boxes or baskets on the two 76 inch shelves above if she wanted to hide it. Ir move one of the boxes and put it there in its place.
Love the shelves and the dark color. I would have never have thought to go that dark but girl it works!!!!
It looks awesome!!
I'm in love with this laundry room! I love dark walls, and they look so awesome here behind the wood shelves and white appliances. Great transformation, Stacy!!
I love the black wall! This looks great Stacy!

I am such a fan of black and white - and your laundry room is stunning! I have those ikea baskets too :) Scotch blue is my go to tape - love that it doesn't leak!
Never thought of black as an ideal wall color, but it looks amazing! And I LOVE the laundry guide- just downloaded it! Never could figure out those dang symbols LOL
Your new laundry room looks great! Thanks for sharing it at Motivation Monday on Mom Home Guide! BTW, how did you put up the wood shelves?
I love the black & white theme. I'd love to redo mine. I need to put a new floor in too.
Stacy your laundry room looks fabulous! Wow what a dramatic change. Love the open shelving and your choice of black for the wall color. Thank you so much for sharing at SYS and have a great week!

Oh my goodness I just LOVE this makeover! Loving the bold black wall and all of the fun white accessories. You knocked this one out of the park! Thanks so much for linking up at The DIY Collective! :)
Love this makeover! The black wall is so awesome!
Good job, Stacy! I recently painted my downstairs bathroom cabinets and doors black, the walls a light gray and the trim white! I love it! Your black wall looks absolutely gorgeous! And the storage and shelves add so much to the walls. I will be featuring this on my blog Thursday. Thanks for sharing on Idea Box LInk Party.
Love how this turned out!!
Dramatic and beautiful (not to mention functional)! Thanks for the painting and product tips. Also, love the printables.
I love this! My laundry room is very similar to the builder grade version of this laundry room, but twice the length because it also serves as a pantry. I'm a little scared to do a dark color on such a long wall. However, it is only paint, so I might give this a try.
I see this is from 2016 but I love the shelves.
What type of bracket is holding them up?
How thick of plywood is it?
What stain color did you use?
Thank you, Marci
Hello, is there a pic or tutorial of your homemade laudry basket? This looks great
