My dream house is a mix of indoor and outdoor elements. When I was a kid I really wanted to have lawn instead of carpet in my family room and a pond inside with fish and with a stream that flowed outside. I wanted large trees to grow inside from out of the ground. Doesn't that sound heavenly? While the grass idea might not work, I am still convinced I could have a pond! And I will always be crushing on large indoor trees. I love that they help blur the lines between inside and out. Here are some of my favorite examples.
Large Indoor Trees
Large indoor trees give a space visual interest. They are good at filling awkward corners. Plus, if you have a large tree, that means you get to shop for cute large pots!

I love how this tree drapes over the sitting area so you feel like you are reading your book outside!

A sunny entryway is the perfect spot for a tree.

My fiddle leaf fig in the living room is one of my favorite plants. It is already touching my ceiling (again!) even though I recently cut the top off to propagate.

One time when I was a teenager, my boss asked me to deliver something to someone in a neighboring town. The house was the coolest 70's style home with a tree growing out of the ground in the entryway. It brought back my childhood memories and made me even more determined to have one one day. So the next couple of examples are probably my fave!

I love the full, draping trees and tall & bushy trees, but I also dig the rounded topiary shape of this one.

So I am curious... How do you feel about large indoor trees? Give me all the big tree? Or too much commitment? Do you have any in your homes? If so, what are your favorite kinds?

I love indoor trees but I've not had much luck growing them. I've had a ficus and a fiddle leaf fig and they would both cower when they saw me coming. Come to think of it, I don't have a lot of luck with houseplants in general, lol.
Love them, but to thrive, most require adequate light. Ficus are my favorite, and I have had many, but they have all ended up,outdoors due to scale, mealy bugs or some unknown issue! Groan!
But I do agree, they really speak for themselves when situated in a bright room that they are perfectly happy.
I am worried mine will get too tall for our 8 footceilings!
Maybe you haven't found the right fit :) Finding houseplants that work with your spaces lighting, your schedule, is kind of like dating!
I love the outdoors!...especially the forest! And the thought of a big tree inside is so awesome! And several big trees is even way more awesome! That's why I'm turning my living room into a jungle! I've had this idea for awhile now and finally started on it. I've bought plants, decorative floral vines and plants and a deep forest wall mural. I've just started my jungle but comes spring, I plan on getting several big trees. For now tho, it's the smaller plants and bushes that I'm gonna be filling my living room with. I can't wait for a full blown jungle! It's my long term project which I will continue over the years.
I feel very tempted to try growing a tree in my apartment. I already have many plants, but a tree would be really stunning. Unfortunately my apartment is rather dark and not very large, but I do have the good luck to have a balcony overlooking gardens, and I,m in the center of Rome! If you have any ideas please pass them on.
Best wishes Jacqueline
I bet your view is beautiful!
Yay but ugh. I love to grow plants outside because when the season ends, you are done. Inside, it’s like you have a toddler. Water, feed, quiet coaxing, all out pleading, That said, my two year old peace plant and my one year old pothos are still alive and happy but many dead ficus can attest to my lack of tree skills. I admire yours.
Haha! Some of my houseplants are definitely more needy than others. Pothos are a good plant that doesn't need too much attention. Snake plants, ZZ plants, and philodendrons are some others that are super easy!
I am with you, an Olive tree. Love the look.
I had an established olive tree which I brought indoors for winter, it absolutely thrived but then I dint take it out early enough in the spring and it parched so bad to cut it back to branches- I’ve over fed it and it’s thriving outdoors again but it still leaves a massive void in my kitchen… so I dare bring it in this winter?
Stacy,
I have an 8’ Hinoki Cypress that I plan to transition from my patio to indoor. Where should I begin my search for indoor planters? And how does one deal with the drainage from any indoor plant as large as a tree?
I keep mine in the grower pot and place them in a basket or larger decorative pot. I use one of those clear trays you can get in the planter section of any home or garden store to catch the water that drains out. Amazon, Home Depot, or any home decor store will have large baskets and planters. And container would work, even an umbrella stand or wood crate!

Hey can you suggest me some good indoor tree options (15-20 ft).
I want to plant inside my house and it should reach my terrace, I have cut round in each floor for the tree space around 5 ft in diameter.
