    Planking, Staining, and Progress!

    By Stacy 88 Comments

    *THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED*

    Winners:

Kimberly Kirkland Absher,  Elizabeth Gonzalez, Sandi Allen, Jeannie Garcia-Buechele

I jump from project to project..... mid project. I confess, I have DIY ADD. I can't remember why I moved on from the laundry room before it was actually done. But it probably had something to do with the fact that it was to the point of being functional and I was bored with it. But it is time to go back and address at least finishing the planked walls. I got a new toy from HomeRight that made it so much faster (because being a brand ambassador has its perks)!

    how to stain

Here is the one wall that I planked and stained awhile ago. All that work and only a little of the wall shows. But don't worry, I had a 14 foot wall next to it that was crying out to be covered in gorgeous gray stained wood.

    laundry-room-shelf

    Here is the naked wall.

    laundry room wall before

Whether it is a planked wall, a deck, or a fence, here are the things you will need to stain a large area.

One freakin' awesome StainStick, gloves, paper towels to remove excess stain, and the stain of your choice. I chose Classic Gray by Minwax. It is one of my "go to" colors.

    supplies

Just like the PaintStick that I have blogged about (and professed my undying love for), you suck up the stain into the handle. By gently pushing on the handle, stain comes out the end of the applicator which has a soft, brush like pad. If you have a hard time getting the fill tube into the StainStick use petroleum jelly. If it is leaking stain out of the area you filled it with stain, use petroleum jelly. I would recommend, for your first time especially, to use jelly on those parts before even starting.

    staining wood walls

    (affiliate link)

I first started to apply it horizontally to go with the grain of the wood. But the stain wasn't getting in all the lines in between boards. So I started applying it vertically and it worked SO much better! I did go back and do it horizontal just to smooth it out a bit. And yes, I am gloveless in the pic. My box of gloves was empty....again. My kids think they are balloons or something :)

    applying stain_edited-2

One coat of stain looked good but since I did two coats on the other wall, I went ahead and did a second layer of stain after the first one had dried.

I know this is not super exciting to look at now. It is just a gray wall. But my industrial glam laundry room is about to get kicked up a notch. Reveal to come later!

So do you want to try one out for yourself? FOUR of you will win a StainStick of your own :)
