Clay ( play dough) is a VERY popular activity at our house. And now that it is getting colder, we will be doing even more activities like this. My mom made clay for us growing up and so I have always made clay for my kids. The one downside is that it smells like salt and wet flour because, well, that's mainly what it is. It isn't a big deal, but my sister found a recipe that uses Kool-Aid and it makes it smell like whatever flavor it is AND makes it that color. So you don't even need to add food coloring. A two for one.
This recipe makes four balls this size. They fit perfectly in a sandwich baggie.
Here is the recipe:
2 ½ cups flour
½ cup salt
2 packages of Kool-Aid (any one flavor you want)
Then add 2 cups boiling water with 3 tablespoons vegetable oil and stir until well mixed.
Pull out the cookie cutters and have fun!!!

I used to add a bit of peppermint oil to my playdough...but my boys were always trying to eat it when it smelled good. So back to unscented for us!
I'm from Australia so unfamiliar with Kool-Aid? Is it cordial? What can I substitute it with?
B, Kool-Aid in America is a fruit flavored powder that you mix with sugar and water to make a beverage just about every kid loves.
I have found that cooking the recipe on the stove top makes the colors even bolder. A lot of the cooking recipes for play dough call for cream of tar-tar. I don't find it necessary though. I make some every month for my son's K-class in colors associated with the month or holiday of the month. I'll definitely be using the peppermint oil for December. :)
You had me at smells good! For their 50th anniversary, Play Doh sold play doh scented perfume. All I could think was YUCK! Who would want to smell that if they didn't have to!
How much salt :D we have been stimulating the economy purchasing play doh now that we home school will have to give this a try :D)
Do you let it dry to harden or do you have to bake it? If baking it what temperature? I'm thinking like I want to give these as gifts to grandparents and such and I want them to stand up to the test of time.
Can you bake this? If so what is the temp and time?
Thank you for giving me a reason to use my kool-ade packets!
