I posed the question on my blog's Facebook page one day about whether you liked a ceiling fan or a regular light fixture better. I was getting ready to take down our ceiling fan in the family room and replace it with a gorgeous Pottery Barn light I got on sale. I learned very quickly that y'all LOVE your ceiling fans! And after visiting Florida this past fall with The Home Depot Foundation, I TOTALLY understand. Holy humidity! Our Utah dry heat has nothin' on your Southern humidity.
(After working outside in high humidity..... Can you say one hot mess?)
I wanted a new look to go with my new room so I had no problem taking our ceiling fan down. My husband on the other hand..... was not so sure. Even though we have central air that is excellent at keep our house comfortable I do understand there are times when it is not hot enough to warrant having it run and it is nice to have a fan. They are more energy efficient as well. And if you can get away with just the fan, it is better.
So for that reason, and to appease my hubby, I started to look around for other options. I wanted whatever we got to replace the ceiling fan to be pretty and not an eye sore. I thought maybe I could get a vintage one.When I googled "vintage floor fan" I found antique ones and most didn't work any more. Not only that, but they were PRICEY! I googled just "floor fan" and I saw this beauty and I knew I had to have it! It has that vintage feel but it is new.
It is called the Sutter 16" floor standing fan. I found it on a website called Lamps Plus. They actually have a ton of different styles. This one was the perfect color and style for my cute 1938 home :)
I contacted LampsPlus.com and they were kind enough to send it to me. I love how it looks like a part of the decor AND is functional.
My husband is happy, and I am happy. And my kids are praying it warms up soon so we can test it out :) But with single digit temperatures I don't think we will need it for a while!
Stacy- I love your family room! I totally agree with you about ceiling fans vs. light fixtures! Your floor fan is stunning. It gets pretty humid in Georgia, so we left one of the two up in our family room! [for now]

I love your new fan! I have convinced myself that living in Southern California (100+ temps for days on end in the summer), we need ceiling fans in every room. But I've lately been reevaluating. I'd loooove to hang some cute light fixtures.
I love my ceiling fans, but a cute fan like that doubles as deco and you still get the air movement. ♥♥
We're deciding now whether to get a ceiling fan/light combo or plain light fixture above our dining room table. The boyfriend gets extremely hot, so he's leaning towards the ceiling fan. I don't particularly care for the look. But, I love your alternative!!
We live relatively close to the beach -- so I'm going to work on him to convince him he needs to just open the balcony doors instead of getting a ceiling fan!
That fan is super cute! I'm in the anti-ceiling fan category but I'm from Canada so we don't have much use for them here :)
I am in Las Vegas. Every room in our house pretty much has a ceiling fan. Only our front room doesn't and we don't hang out there. LOL. In our room and the family room, we have floor fans as well. Sometimes when we are just that hot, we have them both on just for that extra breeze. It makes a world of difference without having to turn the air down (and the power bill up!). Looks great! The floor fan is pretty, but yikes, $235! I showed my hubby the floor fan, and he's wondering if we can DIY our cheap white standing floor fan, with the tripod looking base, into something like this. Our current fan is so ugly, I keep it in the garage except for the couple months of summer when it gets really hot, lol. Hmmmm, wheels are turning and I'll let you know if we come up with a good solution.

I live in Baltimore and try to be energy and budget conscious. We have a ceiling fan in all four bedrooms. While I would prefer more attractive overhead lighting options, our ceiling fans are very much needed for both heating and cooling our 1960's ranch style home. I do my best to find a middle ground on the ceiling fan front. I do love your floor fan, however, my little ones would have that knocked over or injure themselves before I could probably get any real use out of it. It looks lovely in your home.
I truly do not like anything on my ceilings that distract (stand out, actually SCREAM out!) from the congruent lines in my coffered ceilings, BUT, living in Georgia they are a MUST in summer months! Our home was built in the mid-90's so all 10 interior fans had polished brass accents which I now HATE with a passion! My winter project this year was to take down all that abrasive brass and tone it down via spray paint to a softer antique bronze which is much more soothing and appealing. I was a bit apprehensive at first but it truly did turn out well!
It's a must to have ceiling fans in NC, plus I personally think they add a lot of charm to a room. We didn't have them growing up in GA, and my parents refused to turn on the AC unless it was 100 degrees out, so I really do appreciate my ceiling fans. Cannot even imagine taking one down for a chandelier, but to each his or her own:). BTW, love your blog and the rest of your house.
I like ceiling fans but when you are tall they pose a danger to the hair style.sadly we don't have heat that often to need fans more that a month a year if we are lucky
Your retro-style standing fan is adorable, but I couldn't live without my ceiling fan. In the summer it keeps us cool, and in the winter it keeps the warm air from building up at the ceiling. And in my bedroom, year round I have GOT to have a ceiling fan going, even if it's -5 F and I've got the electric blanket set on high.

Funny! I have cute chandeliers and hanging lamps that I would totally trade for a ceiling fan in a heartbeat! We do have central air but we also have vaulted ceilings. I would definitely prefer to have something to push the air back down to where we are. Vaulted ceilings are so silly, ugh. Your fan is super cute, I just don't need more stuff to cram into my rooms, lol!
