Dig In & Get Organized: Smart Storage for Gardening Gear

    By Stacy Leave a Comment

We do not currently have a backyard garden shed and our tiny, detached one car garage is overflowing. It is very easy to lose track of smaller items. I can't tell you how many times I have had to dig through piles of things to try and find my hand trowels or twine. Because of this, I have started to store my smaller things inside. Up until now they have been in a tote. Today I am sharing my storage for gardening gear! It keeps my tools and accessories organized, protected, and easy to access all season long.

This post was sponsored by Digz Gardening but all ideas and opinions are 100% my own.

adding things to the over the door organizer

Many years ago I organized my home office closet to hold all my tools and DIY supplies. It has been a system that has worked really well for us. I wanted to include my gardening tools as well, but was lacking any available space. When you live in a small home, you tend to get creative when it comes to space, and this was no different.

I had covered all three walls with shelves but what about the door?

Actually, up until this point we didn't have a door on this closet. The door was badly damaged when we bought the house so it got taken off and stored away. That was part of why the storage in that closet needed to be pretty. But I now really needed a door so I fixed the damage, stripped the paint, and repainted it to match the other doors.

I tested for lead paint before tackling this project. Always test before sanding, scraping, or stripping paint older than 1980.

    Indoor Storage For Gardening Gear

I looked online and found the perfect over the door storage on Amazon (affiliate link). It has 5 shelves that are large enough to hold all my gardening accessories. It was very affordable too. There is a 4 shelf option as well as a 6 shelf option depending on your storage capacity needs.

Since everything else was labeled in my office closet, I of course had to label the shelves. I used my cricut to cut out vinyl. I was hesitant to use iron-on material since I wasn't sure what the hanging organizer was made out of and it felt plasticy. The vinyl looks great, however it is not sticking quite as well as I hoped. I think I will need to cut more vinyl and use the negative space as a stencil to paint the lettering on. I'm going to give it some time and see how it holds up.

You could also just make little tags and attach them. Or you could forgo the labeling since the shelves are partly see through and it is easy to tell what is in them.

But I do love how it looks with all the categories on the fronts of the cubby shelves! I have space for my sun hats and cooling cloths, all my small garden tools, gardening gloves, seed packets and bulbs, as well as my aprons and collapsible tote.

The little side pockets are perfect for things like string and twine, and neem oil. And the best part is that I have easy access to it all year long.

If all my things were small items, I could have used an over the door shoe organizer as well. Either way, taking advantage of the door is a smart way to maximize storage. When you run out of room, use your vertical space!

    Outdoor Storage For Gardening Gear

This hanging organizer would also work if you did want to store these things in your garage or storage shed. It is a nice place to keep track of smaller items no matter the location. If your shed looks anything like my garage, you might need to take advantage of more vertical storage for smaller gardening tools!

If you are going to be storing your hand tools outside, it is a good idea to store them in sand. Fill a container with clean, dry sand and place your hand tools (sharp side down) into the sand. This keep them sharp and dry. You can do this for your larger long-handled tools as well with a larger bucket of sand.

    Sharpening Garden Tools Before Storage

BONUS TIP: Before storing them away for the winter, it is best to sharpen them so they are ready to go in the spring. For hand tools like these pruners and snips from Digz Gardening, you can use sharpener like this inexpensive one from amazon. Simply swipe the sharpener across the blade at an angle a few times until it feels sharp.

What are your favorite ways to store your garden supplies and small tools? I'd love to hear about it and get even more clever ideas! Anything is possible with a little creativity :)
