I am a BIG gardener!!!! I love it. It is my therapy. There is just something about being outside and digging in the dirt that makes me feel better. Calm. Relaxed. The fact that you can plant a tiny seed and it grows to be a plant that produces food will never cease to amaze me. It is a miracle. My boys love our big garden. They always say it is like grocery shopping in our back yard. They love to help so this year I thought it would be fun if I dedicated one section of the garden for a kid garden. Then I had the idea as I was looking through seed magazines that it would be even better to have a rainbow garden!!!! I know my boys are going to get a kick out of growing things like carrots and having them be colors that are not common. Here are some of the things we will be growing this year:
Red, yellow, and purple tomatoes, rainbow mix carrots, black radishes, blue potatoes, and colored cauliflower. I forgot to add a picture for these but we are also growing purple and yellow string beans :)

Please tell us what everything is. I recognize most of it but can't decide on a couple. Also, where do you get your seeds and do you have any tricks for starting them so they are not spindly.

Love this idea! So fun! I brought home purple cauliflower the other day, and WD insisted that I must have colored it. We tend to grow the basics, mostly herbs and tomatoes. I'd love to start an honest to goodness veggie garden. Maybe this is the year. Thanks for sharing.

I too am excited to get started on our very first IN GROUND garden. We did some herbs in a planter box last year...but we're moving forward. We also started a wild flower egg carton garden in our house (Mid-West...still too cold to plant outside)!! Love this idea...might have to try it next year after I have a little more experience!!!

I'll be starting my 1st outside garden (@ our new house)this year and i can't wait. Here in our apartment i somehow managed to grow a decent tomato plant. So I can't wait to try my green thumbs at something new.
(I already have flowers inside started....anxious for spring? Oh hell yes!)

This is such a COOL idea! I just stumbled it! :) We are really hoping to get into gardening (I have a post all about it coming up soon) this year and would LOVE more info about these veggies. I had no idea some of them came in colors like this! Where do you get them?!

That is such a great idea!! I love it! I'm passing this along to a friend with preschoolers...her kiddos would LOVE this! Mine is still too small to appreciate it, but it gives me something to think about as she grows. Maybe I'll do this with my flower garden, though! :)

Hello! I found your blog at Strut Your Stuff. I love your idea about a rainbow garden for children. I linked up a post about our raised beds. Last year our granddaughters helped us plant corn and beans. They couldn't wait to come back and eat them. I think what your are teaching your children is priceless.

I love the purple cauliflour, I will have to check into that, what a fun idea, maybe my kids would help me weed, if I bought them fun colors.

I just came across your blog today. I love the idea of a rainbow garden and veggies that aren't the colors they are used to. Now I'll have to start planning for a garden for next year.

How do you do the rainbow garden?
