    Flies No More {Retractable Screen Door}

    By Stacy 10 Comments

    I love the warmer months! I love having my kids home for summer vacation, snow cones, gardening, watermelon, outdoor movies, and hiking. What I do NOT love are the endless flies that get in because my kids leave the door open. Andersen Windows and Doors contacted me about reviewing their new LuminAire Retractable Screen Door and it seemed like a no brainer to say yes. We  installed it in about 30 minutes to our most used door in the kitchen. So here's to lots of fresh air and less flies in the house this year!

    Retractable screen door

    It keeps flies out, and little curious dogs in. Even if the neighbor cats walk by :)

    When I say it was easy to install, I am not exaggerating. It is adjustable so it can fit doors from 32" - 36" and if you need to make it smaller, like we did, use a hack saw to shorten it. We only needed to take off half an inch to make it work.

    Fit the pieces together and screw it into the door frame with the screws provided. Then remove the orange clips holding the screen door closed and you are good to go! Extra credit points for my husband who installed it during a rainstorm while I tried to take photos quickly.

    We have had it about a week and we love it! My kids take turns either making dinner or helping me make dinner and we have already had one burned entree and the screen door helped air out the kitchen quickly. Between flies, pups, and budding chefs, the screen door has already proven useful.

    It comes in three different colors and you can find it at the Home Depot.

      Neat idea. I can already see an advantage when carrying things in and out of the door, not having to wrestle with holding the screen door open while your hands are full. And I know already that my nearly 100-year-old house does not have standard-sized doors or windows, an issue when putting in replacement windows and a traditional screen door. So, hats off to Anderson for making it adjustable for the DIYer. How does it mesh with a traditional glass storm door in the winter?

        That was what got me excited about it too! Not much is standard about our old house either :)

        I’m glad this will work for you too! Our kitchen door is south facing as well and that coupled with the fact that it’s where the oven and stove are, it’s the hottest and stuffiest room in the house. Shane is forever leaving the door open to get fresh air (especially during dinner). Then I get to spend the next day swatting flies. I’m looking forward to less flies this year :)

          We picked up our retractable screen door today! The checkout girl eyed it and asked us all about it! I told her what I knew and read and we all agreed it was a much needed product! Unfortunately, We have to add some wood at the base of our door as there is decking and it causes a 3/8 " gap to the bottom sill. So, per instructions, we have to first reinforce the entire door frame. But, after that, I am going to clock my husband to see how close to the 30 min. of expected installation he can make! ;-)

          He made me help stake a tree today in a mucky, muddy area and I was getting eaten alive by misquotes! So, he promised to get this done for me quickly! Ah, a open door with NO misquotes! That will make my summer!!!

              It's in! I can't say how much I really love this product! You did an amazing job describing it and showing how useful it can be to any home! Thank you so much for sharing your story with all of us! This retractable door is a win win for a lot of people! I am off to write a review on my Home Depot web site! Two thumbs up and some happy cats hanging out in the sunshine!

      I have been looking at this screen door. Now I want to invest in one myself, since seeing it here on your blog~. 30 minutes to put on that is a great feature as well :)
