In the past I have not shared my gardening time with anyone. It was my therapy. Weeding was my "me" time at the end of the day. And I was so paranoid about my kids "messing" things up. A couple of years ago I let my boys have a section of the garden.
We planted things that grow a color that is not traditional, like blue potatoes. We also planted rainbow mix carrots, rainbow lettuce, purple and yellow string beans, and yellow and purple tomatoes. I was going to plant black radishes but when the seeds came that I ordered they were red. But that is okay :)
The next year, we made garden markers for them. The kids had so much fun making them!
I cut some pieces of wood with my miter saw. Then the kids sanded them smooth.
We sat outside in the shade and they painted them. I had drawn on the basic shape for my 4 year old and he did pretty good at filling it in.
Here they are drying :)
I used my Silhouette to cut some vinyl lettering out but you could always write on them with marker.
Then I cut a dowel to size. I made them each 12 inches. I got a drill bit that was about the same size as the dowel and drilled a hole in the bottom of the sign.
I squirted some wood glue in there and then pushed the dowel in the hole. After it had dried I sealed it.
And here they are in our little rainbow garden! The kids are so proud of how they turned out.
Last year I didn't plant a garden at all. It was a first for me. The reason was, I knew I was going to have more on my plate than normal. I knew I would be writing a book and traveling more then in the past. Something had to give, and as much as I wanted that thing to be housework and dishes, in reality, I knew it had to be the yard which included the garden.
I knew I was going to miss it but I was surprised by how much my kids did too. My youngest was so upset that he couldn't go out and dig up carrots for a snack. So rainbow carrot seeds were the first thing I grabbed this year :)

This is great - love it when we take the time to incorporate our kids with gardening. It's important for the next generation to have these skills. I'm doing a garden round up article next week on Garden Markers can I share this on my blog?
