I love a good vining houseplant that trails down from a hanging planter, but sometimes it is fun to train them to grow up a trellis. I made the cutest support for a vining houseplant last year and now I want to make a bunch more! It was so easy and practically free. Here is how I made this DIY houseplant trellis!
I gathered vines from my backyard. I have to trim them back every year anyway, so it was nice to put them to good use instead of throwing them away. If you don't have vines growing in your yard, you can use grape vines, or thin tree branches. You could also ask a neighbor for some.
I grabbed some wire I already had to create the frame for the trellis. You are going to want a thicker gauge wire that will hold its shape well. A wire hanger would work as well. Since it was almost Valentines Day, I shaped mine into a heart shape. But any shape will work.
Twist the ends and create a long "tail" at the bottom. This is what you will stick in the dirt to hold up the trellis.
Since my wire was silver, I chose to spray paint it brown so it would blend in with the vines better. This is totally optional.
This is the fun part! Start wrapping the vines around the wire. It is easier to wrap the vines shortly after cutting them so they bend more easily. If you are using grape vines or branches that are not easily bent without breaking, you can soak them in warm water before starting to wrap them. This will soften them up.
When you have it the thickness you want, trim the ends to the same length. Then wrap the wire tail up and around the base to keep the vines in place.
What I love about this project is that you can make any shape you want. Hexagon, star, round, etc. It would be fun to make several circles and combine them to make a sphere! You could even make a bunny or egg shape for Easter!
Add your trellis to the houseplant of your choice and gently wrap the vines around the trellis.
This was such a simple project. Sometimes in the middle of winter, it is nice to do a little indoor "gardening". This DIY houseplant trellis makes the perfect addition to my Valentine's Day mantel!
