3 Things To Look For When Thrifting

    By Stacy 4 Comments

There's nothing quite like the thrill of stepping into a thrift store, not knowing what treasure may or may not be waiting for you. It is alway fun to hunt for things in the aisles of donated items. Here are the 3 things I always look for when thrifting!

3 Things to Look For When Thrifting

I have been hitting the thrift stores more than usual lately because my kids have been asking to go. Apparently thrifting is now popular with teenagers. Who knew? While I was browsing my favorite items, I thought it would be fun to share my favorite things to look for when thrifting.

    Glassware

There is usually a large selection of glassware at thrift stores. Everything from serving platters to bowls to vases. It is an economical way to stock up on large glass items for hosting gatherings. I usually check out vases. I love to take vases of flowers from my yard to friends and family and then if they don't get returned, it's no big deal because they were so inexpensive.

I have seen this next idea floating around social media where you get thrifted plates to place under your houseplants to protect your surface from water. I picked up several clear plates and some black ceramic ones to place under my planters.

    Picture Frames

Now I will admit that a lot of the frames filling this aisle are not worth my time, but man! I have found some real treasures! I have found big, chunky, real wood frames that would have cost a lot new. I have found rustic barnwood frames and large frames for poster sized prints.

This week I found 2 of these square shadow box frames that will be perfect for an upcoming project.

    Baskets

Baskets are an organizing staple. I have them tucked all over my house. While a good portion of the baskets seem to be of the Easter variety, there are usually some good ones in there too like this large fabric lined one (brand new!) for $2.

I bought 1 of these baskets for my bathroom shelves from Target for a chunk of change and regretted not getting another. Low and behold, one day I found the same basket (second hand) for a few dollars! Now I have a matching pair.

I would love to hear about what your favorite things to look for when you are thrifting. Let me know in the comments what your best finds are!

I’ve never met a basket I didn’t love, however I’m picky about style and price.

Need to start back thrifting. Love the bargains I find. I have been reading about thrifting the bins in Goodwill outlets. You pay by the pound. Sounds interesting.

My mother used to pick up pie plates. She would bake pies for people when there was a death, new baby, etc. She always made her own crust and she would tell them not to worry about returning the plate.
I’m always on the hunt for art.

I use to shop at Good Will a lot because I love china, crystal, and baskets. In years past, I found some real treasures. When people started buying stuff to sell online and damaging merchandise, I quit. Getting home to find you missed a big chip in glass and not being able to return it was disheartening. My local store breaks up sets of china and puts them everywhere.
