Tin Foil Dinners Cooked Over the Fire

    By Stacy 65 Comments

The minute it starts to warm up, my boys start asking to have fires in the fire pit. Sometimes we have fires just for fun but most of the time we also cook dinner over the fire. Their favorite meal is tin foil dinners!

I grabbed our Electrolight fire starter from HomeRight (they are giving one away today!) and got going on starting the fire!

Starting a fire with the Electrolight

Sometimes we use hamburger patties, potatoes, and carrots but my favorite kind of tin foil dinner is BBQ chicken. I make tin foil "dishes" and put in a chicken breast covered on BBQ sauce. Then I add red & green peppers, onions, and pineapple.  Basically it is how I make my favorite kind of kabobs but they are not on a skewer.

I cover then with another layer of tin foil and they are ready to go!

    Tin foil dinners

They cook best when the fire has died down some and there are mainly hot coals. Once they were on the coals, I got some bread dough and wrapped them around the roasting sticks. Thinner is better so they don't end up doughy in the middle. You also need to have them cook slowly for the same reason.

Tin foil dinners and campfire rolls

They take longer to cook than a marshmallow so my youngest got board and I cooked his. They turned out pretty good!

    cooking over the campfire

Depending on the thickness of your meat, the tin foil dinners should be ready in 20-30 minutes. I take off the outer layer of foil and eat them right out of the foil "dish".

Cooking over a fire - tin foil dinners

Do you cook dinner over the fire? What are your favorite campfire meals? I would love some new ideas of things to try!

HomeRight is going to giveaway an ElectroLight fire starter to one lucky winner! You will love how quickly it starts a fire, or briquettes. No need for lighter fluid!

Sausage tastes especially good grilled; a little more exciting than hot dogs. I love seeing the activities you do with your kids. I remember cooking bread on a stick at a Legoland in Denmark when my son was little. It just goes to show that you don't need to travel a long way to a theme park to have fun. You can have fun in your own backyard with very little money and lots of imagination. Looking forward to seeing what your family does this summer. You always have great adventures and activities with them.

When our children were young and we would go camping! We would cook most of our meat over an open fire, it was delicious! I sometimes really miss those busy, but memorable days!

A friend taught me about Hobo Pies - two pieces of white bread with apple or cherry pie filling in the middle. You put it in a "hobo pie maker thing" (possible that isn't what it's really called, ha) and put it over the fire. So good!

This is genius! I hate having to light a fire! Last year I used kitchen butane torch but that took forever too and eventually broke. Using my husbands blow torch worked well enough but it’s so bulky and I hated having to light a match to start it up. I love having a fire in the summer and cooking hot dogs over it. We are having a big party for dads birthday this year, DIY foil packs over the fire sounds like a fun option!

OMGosh - I never knew such a thing existed! The ElectroLight Fire Starter looks great! My husband usually starts our fires with lighter fluid, terrifies me. He loves cooking on the grill, we don't usually cook on our campfires. Just a couple tweaks to our dinner plans and we could easily do this, very exciting! With summer coming, I will have awesome opportunities to pump up our meal plans. THANK YOU!!
