That one time we had to kick down the door...

    By Stacy 110 Comments

A year or so ago Shane came with me to the Haven blog conference in Atlanta. My mom stayed with the kids. One night I got a call from my mom saying that they had locked themselves out and could not get in the house. It was past my kids' bedtime and it was pouring rain. They had tried to go through a window but they were all locked and since it was so wet the kids were slipping (our windows are high off the ground).  The kids had used the spare key earlier that week and forgot to put it back in our secret hiding place. We live in a small town and it was after hours so who knows if a locksmith could have been found and if he would have come. They had run out of options, were soaking wet and cold, and wondered what to do. I told them to go ahead and kick the door down. My boys may or may not have been a little too excited to do it.

We lived with a huge crack in our door frame for a long time. It wasn't until that next summer that we replaced the door frame and the door but we still had the old dead bold that required a key. Shane and I had talked about getting a deadbolt that opened with a code so that our boys (and grandma) would always be able to get in no matter what but it kept getting shoved to the back of our minds because of all the other big projects we have been doing. When Schlage™ emailed me about their new lock system that not only had a key pad but also worked with your iphone I was SUPER excited to try it out!

It was really easy to install and it has gotten a lot of use since the boys think it is their new toy. I have to admit it is pretty fun to use.

This pup cracks me up! Ever since he was new to our home if I wanted to take his picture I would bribe him with a treat and tell him to sit so he would hold still. Now when I pull out the camera he automatically sits in front of it and patiently waits for his treat :) I didn't intend to include him in this shoot but he did such a good job of sitting (and he is pretty darn cute) so I figured why not?

There are different styles but I chose the Camelot in satin nickel.

Shortly after we brought one of our dogs home, she ran out the front door and I closed it as I ran out to grab her, not realizing that the door handle was still locked! We ended up calling a locksmith, but this definitely would've saved us the $75 and an hour out in the Florida heat with a freaked out dog!

By the way, I've never commented before, but I recently started coming to your blog and I love all of your ideas!

the aged bronze sense Camelot tough screen. We are in the process of building a new home and have 5 children. We are having to cut some corners in the smaller things (like cool and useful front door knobs and locks) because building a house is SO expensive! So this would be a super exciting win and addition to our new home! You know, when it's finally built!

We are new homeowners and just replaced the locks on all of our doors. We considered this solution but decided there were more pressing places to spend our dollars. Today, I'm kicking myself a little because I was running late this morning and managed to leave my house keys on the foyer table. Ugh...

I'd love to install the Schalge Sense Smart Deadbolt with Century Trim. I think it would work best with the look of our front door, and it would certainly keep me from being locked out!

      I had a similar experience to yours but I was the eldest child waiting for my siblings to come home from school. We had just installed new double pained windows and the garage door remotes was locked inside on top of my bedroom dresser! I had our spare key but our dead bolt was broken so badly that a helpful friend managed to break the spare key in half trying to get the lock to turn. So we went to the church youth activity that night and came home to our trusted family friend removing the entire deadbolt so we could get in the house. You'd better believe my parents got a neat key pad lock for the garage door and a new dead bolt :}

This is a difficult choice to me. I love the keyless entry. However, there are also bonuses to the keyed entry. with the capability to use both iPhone/IPad and Apple TV, and the alert to entry into the home, plus prevention of burglary. I would truly like to see a combination of the two as the ultimate protection as either has a weak spot in its defense of our home. I do not think the keyless entry will be the best start-up lock and I love that there is no lock to pick, and it can be entered by the button punching method. No keys to carry or keep up with. The designs are sleek and modern and look good with any home design.

Our front door automatically locks when you close it. Which is not very convenient when you just run out real quick to turn on the Christmas lights and the door shuts behind you. I've had to break back into my house twice now. We've been talking about getting a lock with a code for a while now but haven't wanted to spend the extra money yet. I love this concept as well. I've been looking at them for quite some time, but they're a little out of the budget right now. It would really help alleviate the problem we have with missing house keys and also forgetting to put the spare back in its hiding spot. Since we all have smart phones, it would making getting locked out a non-existent problem, maybe even useful to unlock the door when coming in with groceries?

This would be great for us, because my daughter has a terrible habit of losing her keys. She doesn't live at home anymore, but when she wants to stop by she usually has to wait for us to be home, because she never ever has keys! We don't do the "hidden key outside" thing, and don't want to start!

I would love this Schlage Smart Sense Deadbolt! It would be wonderful in making sure my kids didn't get locked out and would also solve the issue of them leaving the house unlocked when they go out but can't find a key. And when my husband runs, or when I bike - we wouldn't have to worry about carrying a key or hiding one under the flowerpot. (Like that's safe?!)

Since I am a single woman, living alone, I'd love to have this smart lock... it would give me peace of mind, especially if I need to let people in when I can't be there... then I can just change the code so they can't get back in later!

I like the http://www.schlage.com/content/sch-us-2/en/home/products/BE479CENFFF.html in matte black. Our front door has a coded lock that was here when we bought this home last summer. It's ugly, but we left it there so that our grandson and exchange student don't need to take a key to school (they walk to and from school). This one is pretty and the black would look awesome on our soon to be red door!

Our home was built in 1940, as were the homes around ours. We purchased it from the original owners and never bothered to change the locks. We live in a pretty quiet subdivision and never though of it being an issue. One day while my husband was in the basement and I was in the kitchen, I heard what sounded like someone trying to open our front door. Lo and behold, someone entered our house. I stepped into the kitchen doorway and was able to see this person and started screaming for my husband, who came running up the stairs. It turned out the guy was the brother of the woman who had moved into the house next door to us only two days before. He thought he was going to her house but clearly had the wrong address. She had given him a spare key and funnily enough, it worked in our locks. We still haven't changed ours, but she changes hers. So we could definitely use a change! :)

We totally have this lock on the door into our garage! It is AWESOME! Not only can my husband unlock it before we get inside (which is amazing when your arms are full of groceries) but we have the alert sensor enabled so that when our sneaky 2 year old decides to try and venture outside the lock chimes and tells on her! We also have it linked to our Wink app and so when I'm half asleep in bed and think "Did I lock the door?" I just check the app instead of waddling my 9.5 month pregnant butt downstairs to double check! I love this lock so much!

I've been reading a lot about smart locks as an integral part of a smart home. Been wanting to put in a Schlage smart lock but I'm curious as to how it could stand up to exposure to the elements. My house lies on a East to West orientation. During summer, the afternoon sun beats mercilessly on my front door. I live in Blythe, CA and desert temps during the summer can be unforgiving.
