I have put off posting about my experiences at the blog conference EVO because I didn’t know how to approach it. I didn’t want it to come off as “look what I got to do and you didn’t”. I want to share what I learned and why I go to blog conferences.
When I went to my first blog conference I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know about blogging. I had just thought that if I created awesome things and posted about them then I would it would all work out. I had no idea what SEO was or all the ins and outs of the business side of things. I had no idea you could contact a company about sponsoring you to go to a conference. Oh the things I learned!!! Not only that but I got to hang out with some pretty amazing people.
I think the best thing I got out of going to a blog conference was confidence. I was surrounded by people who “got” me. I was in a room with hundreds of people who were as nutty about creating as I was and I didn’t have to worry about if I was boring them with “shop talk”. They were all as passionate as I was. I can’t describe that feeling. My family and friends are super supportive but I always hesitate to talk about my blog because I don’t want to see that glossed over look in their eye that screams “OKAY. Change the subject already.”
Alright, so lets get down to some things I learned. This guuy right below here is my new crush. I have a total technology crush on him and I want him to be my neighbor and run my blog. He was not only incrediblt smart but an EXCELLENT speaker. He was from Denmark I believe and if his accent wasn’t cute enough he said fun words like “snipplet”. He spoke all about SEO (search engine optimization). I had just come from a class that was a panel of three people. Quite frankly, they sucked. I learned not one little thing and the lady kept saying that we were “just” bloggers. And you all know how much I hate that!!!!! So Dennis here was a breath of fresh air. This was a 3 1/2 hour class so there is no way I will ever beable to share it all BUT I will give you the link to his post. He breaks it all down and has all the slide he used in his class. It was mind blowing.
Another class I went to was a photography class. You can read the recap HERE. We had to ride up the mountain (WAY up the mountain) to a building for the class. I am not a fan of heights. Going up was not so bad but the going down was freaky! I may or may not have buried my head in Char’s shoulder and said “Talk to me! Just keep talking! I don’t even care if it is about boogers. Just talk!” She was a good sport and kept my mind off the fact that I could fall to my death at any moment.
I met a cute new friend. She is Page from Where Women Create. LOVE her :) I kind of didn’t know how big of a deal she was when I first met her which was probably a good thing.
This is half way down. I wish I would have taken one from the top. It was straight down!
Okay, this has nothing to do with what I learned but I have to share. I am addicted to the show The Biggest Looser. I watch it faithfully while eating ice cream. One of my favorite contestantse ever was Sarah from this past season. I totally hung out with her. Yep. I did. And she is even more fun in person! When I first met her I didn’t want to come off as the crazy obsessed fan that i am so I waited a whole 30 minutes before confessing. She is darling :)
The closing keynote speaker was AH. MA. ZING. A balled like a little baby at her incredible story. Her name was Me Ra Koh. You can read her blog post too. I wish I had a link to her word for word story. I came home and retold it to every person I could.
And one final photo that I stole from my cute friend Heather at Whipperberry….
Here is a link to the post on the EVO webiste that has all the recaps from all the classes.http://evoconference.com/2011/07/recap-posts-for-evo11-sessions-and-workshops/ There really was a lot of good information. I hope that this helps you guys :)
