THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED
*The winner is Jessica Wyatt*
Mother’s Day is just around the corner. Whenever I ask my mom what she would like she comes back with an answer like ice cube trays, wooden spoons, or the classic “Nothing. I already have all I need with you sweet kids.” Aww precious, right? But not so helpful when you really want to get her something nice as a thank you for all you put her through over the years.
This past year was a rough one for her and my side of the family so I really wanted to get her something nice. Something a little better than ice cube trays. So when Blue Nile asked if I wanted to participate in their Mother’s Day campaign I was all for it. I was able to pick something beautiful out for my mom. And one of you lucky readers will also get to spend $100. You can spend it on yourself or get you mom a little something special. They have a whole section devoted to jewelry for $100 or less.
Not only is Blue Nile doing a giveaway, but they are having a Pin it to Win it contest with a huge prize…. a diamond necklace! You can get all the details here on their site. It is super easy to enter. Wouldn’t that be so neat of it was one of you who won? I will cross my fingers for you!
I picked out and ordered something for my mom and it came in 2 days!
I thought that since it is Mother’s Day soon I would also show you a couple of ideas for simple gift boxes. In my head I had ideas swimming about embellishing them and painting all sorts of designs, but when it came down to it, I like things simple and it just wouldn’t have been “me”. Plus, the simple boxes let the present inside shine and take center stage :)
I LOVE dark stained wood. And this could easily be dressed up if you wanted to add things to it. A ribbon, painted flowers, stripes, pretty much anything!
(My mom reads my blog so…..SURPRISE mom! This is what you are getting!)
I bought this wood circle box (I feel weird calling it a box since it was round….) at a local craft store for not very much money. I brought it home and lightly sanded it with a 220 grit sandpaper.
Instead of my “go to” color of Dark Walnut, I went with Provincial (which is a close second). I applied it with a paper towel since I was out of foam brushes and because it was such a small project.
I may end up sealing it with polyurethane, but I love the rustic look without a shiny sealer. Add a twine bow and a little greenery for a natural look, or a fun bright ribbon.
(Isn’t this bracelet fabulous? It is the Waves Cuff Bracelet in Sterling Silver)
The second gift box idea was still simple but had a little more to it. I had a design in mind that was a bit more detailed but I couldn’t find the cord to my Silhouette machine to cut out the vinyl so I had to simplify it since I was going to cut it out by hand with an X-acto knife (razor blade knife).
I started out with one of those cardboard boxes you find at any craft store. They have them in all sorts of sizes and shapes and they are dirt cheap. I sprayed mine with white spray paint. It took a couple of coats since it soaks the paint up and since spray paint is generally pretty thin.
I used painters tape for the stripe and vinyl for the monogram. I pressed down hard to make sure it was on there really good and then I used gold craft paint to paint the designs. Once it was mostly dry (I don’t let it dry completely or the paint and tear off with the tape) then I removed the tape. You can also use the razor to score along the tape if you are afraid of the paint coming off.
Add some tissue paper and you are all set. No ribbon needed!
I am so excited to be able to give my mom something special this year. And I love that it is a bit more frivolous and a lot more fun than a wooden spoon :)
