My Driveway got a MAKEOVER!

Are y’all ready to behold the best makeover a driveway could ever receive?

driveway-makeover-1

Okay so maybe this wasn’t exactly the type of makeover you were expecting ;) But the new van did improve how our home and driveway look! And we did do some improvements such as painting the garage doors, adding a new light, adding house numbers, and cleaning the oil stain on the cement. Either way, it is a HUGE improvement.

Yes, we got a “used-but-new-to-us” van!!! And honestly, I was not planning on posting about it here at all. BUT……. when our old van died,  I reached out to you on facebook a few months ago and asked for advice on shopping for a vehicle. You guys were amazing! I had so many comments and I seriously read through them with my husband and made notes. You guys helped so much.

So I wanted to show off my new-ish van and say thank you for your help. It was my first time car shopping for me and I was terrified. The last vehicle we bought a friend of a friend picked it up at an auction and so we didn’t see it until after we bought it. And the first car we bought as a married couple my husband just showed up with one night. Uhhhhh, yeah. And I am still married to him :P  I had been shopping with my older sisters before I got married and I didn’t have a good experience. I felt like I needed a shower after getting home.  I am sure you know what I mean.

The first couple of places we went were the big, huge dealers than mainly sell new. It was the exact experience I was expecting. Then we went to a smaller lot. They had a TON of Honda Odyssey vans. They had other things as well, but I couldn’t help but notice the plethora of the Hondas. Since that is what we were in the market for, I got a tiny bit excited. But I still put up my “you aren’t going to bully me in to something I don’t want” front and prepared myself. The place was called Forrest Motors and it is in Orem, Ut.

And guess what? I love them. Yep. I had such a FUN, good experience I kinda want to invite the owners, Forrest and Sammy,  over for a backyard BBQ. The experience I had there verses the other car lots was night and day people! Night and day! I could have chatted with them all night. I trust them completely. And I loved them so much I offered to have them as a sponsor. So Look over at my sidebar. Maybe even click over and say “hi”. ————————–>

Alrighty, back to the makeover of my driveway…..

Every year I change up my outside décor. One year I was feeling extra patriotic and did red, white, and blue. One year was all white, one year was blue. You get the idea. This year I went with yellow. Remember my side porch that got freshened up? The yellow plaque for the house numbers and yellow flowers tie into the lemon wreath and yellow flowers on the porch and the hello mat. I also have yellow flowers on the front porch which I just realized I have yet to show you.

garage-and-porch

Our old van had an oil leak. We took it in a million times and had every thing replaced and it still leaked. It baffled two different mechanics. We gave up hope of ever having an oil free driveway. Once we sold the old van I scrubbed the driveway with Dawn dish soap and a little bit of water. I cleaned up the dirty suds with paper towels and then rinsed it off. I went through almost a whole thing of Dawn and 4 big rolls of paper towels! It looks pretty good now. You can still see where it was. I am thinking a round two may do the trick.

oil-spill

I realized that I hosed off all the mud (mud pie making mess from my 3 year old) and then hurried and snapped pictures but never got a good shot of the cleaned up oil. It was by the little door so this is the best I have. We bought these plastic planters at Home Depot. They were originally black. I used plastic spray paint to paint them red.

garage

The old light on our garage never did work. And then one day it just fell. Kind of like its head hung in shame. The wood was rotted so we added a board and a new light.

old-light

We got this light at Home Depot and it is the kind that automatically comes on when it starts to get dark. I think it is called a “dawn to dust” feature. It will act as a spotlight to our new house numbers! I cut the plaque out of plywood, painted it, and added vinyl numbers.

light-house-numbers

We are happy with the new look of our driveway… and the van :) The only painful thing was that we have not had a car payment in almost 7 years. We have only had ONE car for 10 of our 13 years of marriage. So the decision to buy a car was HUGE for us. We took it very seriously. We took into account all of your advice. And we opted to go for a 2006 van with several miles on it so that our payment was low. Luckily we had just refinanced our house and our mortgage payment went down more than $200. So as much as I HATE going into debt, it will not affect us as far as the monthly payment. I am hoping when we have a good month we can pay more than the payment and pay it off quickly. My husband and I have NEVER had a credit card. We have never gone into debt for anything other than a few student loans and our house. But when you have little kids and you travel out of state to visit family, you need something that won’t keep dying on you. In fact, the last few times we went anywhere past an hour away, we had to rent a van because our mechanic said it wouldn’t last!

new-honda-van

But we couldn’t pass up the awesome deal we got at Forrest Motors and we feel so safe driving all over. AND it has air conditioning! Summer is going to be so much more enjoyable this year.

I wrote this post before My husband was laid off from work. I feel confident that since the last 3 times he was laid off we were able to maintain our mortgage payment that we will be fine this time too seeing as the van payment + the new lower mortgage payment = the old mortgage payment. I do not regret getting this new van. I have faith in our ability to be resourceful until Shane can get a new job.

The Grass Is Greener On The Other Side….. Or Is It???

Sometimes I am very introspective and get lost in my thoughts. I have been thinking about something and I felt inspired to share. After reading comments on several Facebook pages and other blogs about bloggers and their perfect lives, it started to make me think.

There are times I still find myself being envious of other people, other bloggers especially. I see the vacations they get to take when we as a family have not been on one in years. I see their kids in super cute new clothes all the time when my 3 year old is wearing clothes that my 11 year old wore when he was little (and most of those were hand me down from cousins). I see their clean homes. Not just clean in pictures on their blog (because we all know that was staged for a photo shoot) but also clean in instagram shots. And I look at my messy house and sigh.

And then I thought, what if people think things like that when they read MY blog. I hope not. I try so hard to keep things real over here. I  sometimes feel like there isn’t a single thing y’all don’t know about me. Maybe I over share. But I do it so you know that I have struggles too. I have a budget. I have stress. I have messes. I have faults.

I was watering my grass tonight. And it made me think of that cliché saying “The grass is always greener on the other side.” Yes, it is cliché. But there is a reason that it caught on.

We have strict watering restrictions right now due to the drought conditions. I can only water on certain days and only during certain times. My grass is dying. It is patchy and just plain dead in some areas. I drive around my neighborhood and think “They HAVE to be cheating! How can their grass be so green?” But then I came inside and looked out the window. From that vantage point our grass looked so green. It was weird. Even though I KNEW it had patchy areas all over. And then I realized that my neighbors probably have patchy spots too, IF I WERE TO LOOK CLOSELY. That is the key. The perspective.

Those blogs that I read that seem perfect are written by people just like me. Behind that blog is a person with struggles, messes, stress, and faults. Not all bloggers are comfortable sharing every aspect of their lives. Some of them are super private. And after meeting a lot of bloggers in real life I can testify that this is true, first had. I have seen their lives UPCLOSE. I think if you knew what some of them were going through it would blow your mind. For some of them their blog is a retreat where they can share the good things in their life and the pretty things they create.

I guess the point of all my pondering, and for writing this post, is to say – do not compare. There are always going to be people that look like they have it all. That look like they have their crap together. And guess what? Some may be awfully close to having it all or having their crap together. Just like there are probably people in my town who actually have green grass! There will be people who are more talented, have more money, have closer families, or whatever. But if we dwell on that, then we can’t fully appreciate what we have.  We can’t appreciate the view of our green grass from the window if we are constantly either standing over our dry spots and complaining or looking out the window to our neighbor’s lawn and being envious.

I wrote this post and then the next day something happened that drove home the point even more…..

My husband lost his job yesterday. His company has been struggling badly and in one last ditch effort to save the company they have let go most of the employees. Any hope we had of taking our kids to Disneyland in the fall are gone now. Whether I can finish the many projects I have started is up in the air. And anything else we were going to do in now in question. It will be hard to get on Facebook and see all the summer vacations posted.  But I am going to try to look at them with my new found perspective. I am going to be happy that they get to do those fun things and know that our time will come one day. And I will hope others will be equally happy for me when my day comes.

I hope you all know how much I appreciate you. I hope you know that every comment and every email is GOLD. I feel such a strong sense of community. Maybe that is why I am so comfortable sharing things with you. I wish we could have a big party and all get to meet each other in real life because I would hug the crap out of all of you.

I love you guys. You are amazing.

Artichoke Bruschetta

Today I am going to share with you my FAVORITE recipe in the whole universe! I literally could eat the whole thing by myself. I may or may not have made a batch and ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner one day. Okay, I may have done that more than once…..

I kind of made this recipe up. I added a bunch of my favorite things together and threw it on some toast. If you like artichokes, you will DIE.

artichoke bruschetta1

I make this ALL the time in the summer when my garden is in full swing. But I also make it in the winter. I could make it every day and be happy.

8-10 Roma tomatoes, diced

1-2 red peppers, chopped finely

2-3 tablespoons of chopped  fresh basil

1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano

2 tablespoons of olive oil (I don’t really measure. I just drizzle it over the top before baking)

8 ounces Mozzarella cheese, cubed

2 (12 ounce) jars of MARINATED artichoke hearts, chopped ( I grow artichokes so in the summer I steam the hearts and then just add a little white vinegar or rice vinegar to imitate the marinated hearts) I also add a little of the liquid from the jar to the mixture because I love the vinegar flavor.

Not all marinated artichoke hearts are created equal. I have tried a couple brands that tasted metallic even though they were in a glass jar. I like Napoleon brand and Delallo.

tomato-artichoke-bruchette-ingredients

I guess technically you could eat it with out cooking it. I am not a fan of uncooked tomatoes. I know, I am weird. So I bake it at 375 degrees for about 30 minutes. It helps all the flavor marry together.  I serve it toasted bread. When I serve it to guests I have it on cute baguette bread. But secretly in my house I load as much as I can on a thick slice of regular bread. Homemade bread it the BEST.

If you follow me on instagram or Facebook you may already know, but we have decided to adopt 2 girl pygmy goats. They will be ready in 6 weeks. That gives me enough time to build them a home next to the chickens and ducks. We are so excited!

CLEANING & ORGANIZING TIPS

Hexagon Greenhouse

I realized the other day that I posted about my green house and directed you to the crafting for charity event but I never actually shared my tutorial with you. Here is how I turned an updated curio cabinet into a greenhouse!

hexagon-greenhouse-pinterest

I originally was going to build one from scratch. But I had a deadline. So I brainstormed about other ways to do it. Curios came to mind because they already have so much glass. Also, most of the indoor greenhouses I have seen have been table top versions. I start a lot of seedlings and wanted something bigger. I found this 6 foot curio cabinet on our local online classifieds for $25.00!!! Yes, it was sadly out of date but it had loads of potential. The shape of it was half of a hexagon so it made sense to me to capitalize on that and cover it in a hexagon pattern. I just love the hexagon pattern!

before-after-greenhouse2

The first thing I did was cover the glass with newspaper and painters tape.

prime-paint

Then anything that had a shiny finish (except the glass of course), got sanded. I did this because primer and paint will stick better to a dull surface.

sand-before-prime

Then I primed and painted everything that had been gold.

Next I cut out a hexagon pattern out of vinyl. I used my Silhouette machine but if you do not own a machine, there are places online you can order custom vinyl. Make sure you have your exact measurements for them and maybe even a rendering of what you want it to look like.

Another option (which I almost did) is to cut the pattern out of 1/8 inch plywood with a jig saw.

Or you could even stencil it on. There are a ton of stencil options available at crafts store and online.

Before applying the vinyl, clean the glass well.

putty-knife-vinyl

Once you have your vinyl (it will be stuck to a clear transfer paper) you need to line it up where you want it and then use something thin, hard, and flat to rub the vinyl. A credit card or a plastic putty knife would work. This allows the vinyl to stick to the glass so that when you pull the transfer paper off, the vinyl stays put. I added the vinyl to the outside of the curio cabinet.

open-hexgon-greenhouse2

And then fill it with you favorite plants and seedlings and put it in a sunny, cool place.

hexagon-greenhouse

Do you start your plants from seed? If so, do you use a green house? I would love to hear your thoughts! Now that I have planted all my seedlings, I think I will fill mine with houseplants and maybe some herbs :)

Summer Home Tour 2013

I am so excited to have been invited to be apart of Gina’s Summer Home Tour! I have been following along for the first few days and have had so much fun peeking into the homes of my favorite bloggers.

If you are visiting from my pal Traci’s blog, Beneath My Heart, or if you found me some other way……WELCOME! I am happy to have you as a guest today.

Get ready for a picture heavy post! I have a lot of rooms to cover, inside and out :)

summer-home-tour-collage

Here is the outside of our 1938 cottage style home.

front-house

My favorite thing about my house is the (original) rounded front door. LOVE! I painted a harlequin pattern on the ceiling of the porch. It gives it a little unexpected drama when people come to the door.

porch-ceiling

When you first walk in, you are in the family room. We spend the most time here so I wanted it bright, sunny, and cheerful.

family-room

My husband’s favorite thing is this little nook. So instead of covering it up, I made shutters for it and created a faux window.

family-room-flowers

My kids favorite thing is this upholstered bench. I found my 9 year old asleep on it in the middle of the day yesterday! They like to read and look out the window for dad.

family-room-bench

I couldn’t find an antique card catalog for a decent price so I built my own!

card-catalog-side-table

We didn’t have a fireplace so I built one and added an electric insert. And the mantel is the perfect place to display some of my favorite things.

family-room-mantel

Speaking of favorite things….. We call this gallery wall our “favorite things” wall. My kids helped pick out the items. They all have a memory attached to it.

family-room-gallery

Moving out of the family room you are in the hallway, or the central hub of the upstairs. It is in the center and is more of a circle than a real hallway. All the room branch off of it like spokes on a wheel.

stairway-hallway

This is where my mason jar planter hangs. It is my most pinned, most published, most STOLEN project to date.

mason-jar-planter-board

frame-around-vase-672x1024

One of the rooms off of the hallway is the family office/mudroom. I do all my work in here for my blog and the kids do art projects and sometimes homework.

turquoise-office

The fence picket shelves also open up into drawers for paper storage.

office-shelves-

I don’t like things stuck to my fridge so I created a giant magnet board for important papers and art. The bench I built for shoes. The wall that is not pictures has hooks galore for coats and backpacks,

office-shoe-bench-magnet-board1

Most office closets hold office supplies or craft supplies. But when you are a DIYer, they hold power tools, duct tape, and caulk :)

office-closet-bins2

Next to the office is the bathroom.  I cut out a fun shape to cover the existing builder’s grade medicine cabinet, built a clock, and added old door knobs for the towel holders. I also stained the bead board instead of painting it the traditional white.

bathroom-vanity-

This medicine cabinet was in my dad’s barn. It held all the horse medicine. I cleaned it up and sealed it and now it holds toilet paper above the toilet.

old-bathroom-cabinet-673x1024

We got granite counter tops last year.

bathroom-counter-granite

The last stop in our upstairs is the (tiny) kitchen and dining area. I painted it a botanical green because I garden and use fresh herbs A LOT. It reminds me of oregano and basil :)

I love the checkerboard pattern I painted on the ceiling the best.

kitchen

I painted the kitchen cabinets myself.

painted cabinets

kitchen-renovation

I also added a wall next tot he fridge so you couldn’t see the ugly fridge backing. It made the perfect spot for a command center!  Family mantra, job charts, and a magazine rack for home work.

kitchen-organization2

Downstairs we have the bedrooms, the laundry room (unfinished), a future bathroom that we are currently adding, and an unfinished space that will be another bedroom one day when I win the lottery :P

Here is the boys’ bedroom. It is 21 feet long by 10 feet wide. So we put all 4 boys in there. It is divided into two spaces. The first is meant to feel like you are the size of a bug. It was inspired by a trip to the Bug’s Life part of California Adventures in Disneyland. I used a few parts from an existing bunk bed and built the rest.

A trundle pulls out at night for our youngest.

With four boys and only one closet, we had to make every square inch count.

Our oldest wanted a space to himself but wasn’t quite ready to leave his brothers. So the end of the room got turned into an airplane room for him.

My bedroom is like a retreat for us! It is romantic and calming :) I stenciled the ceiling in a damask pattern. This bedroom was actually featured in Better Homes and Gardens a couple of years ago.

3_edited-1

I turned a brass light fixture into a chandelier using some beads and spray paint.

1room

And “Our Song” is on the wall by the bed. It reminds me of when we were dating :)

1_edited-1

I ADORE having fresh cut flowers in our home. I have a ton planted outside just so I can cut them and bring them inside. In the winter I splurge and buy them at the grocery store every now and then.

2_edited-1

Let’s step outside to another room….. My secret garden!

secret-garden-peek

The book “Secret Garden” was one of my favorites as a child and I always dreamed of having one of my own. The awkward side yard that served no purpose was the perfect place to put mine. I even have a key!

secret-garden-gate-above

secret-garden-flower-box

I treated it like it really is a room. I even hung a mirror.

secret-garden-mirror

This is my happy place. I love to sit here and read, cool off after doing yard work, or open both doors and watch the kids play in the backyard. I even have a solar powered lamp.

secret-garden-trellis

I made some moss art for the wall. And I have a potting table.

Blueberry Yogurt Bars

I have been looking for healthier versions of creamies and popsicles. In the last several months we have become fans of plain Greek yogurt. We use it as a sour cream substitute, in smoothies, and with fruit and granola.

I came up with another way to use it the other day. We made Blueberry Creamies :)

blueberry-creamies

Flavored yogurt typically has a ton of added sugar (even honey flavored). So I used plain yogurt, a little honey to sweeten it, and blueberries.

blueberry-creamie-ingrediants

I added 2 cups of plain Greek yogurt, 1 cup blueberries, and 2 table spoons of honey in the blender. Then I poured it into popsicle molds and froze them until they were hard. This made 6 pops. It will depend on the size of your molds how many you will get.

blueberry-creamie-in-molds

The thickness of the Greek yogurt makes these super creamy. I have tried freezing regular yogurt in the past and it doesn’t have the same texture. And they are really good! But don’t just take my word for it……..

They were a hit :)
