We are gearing up for the kitchen makeover! I am almost done with the dining room area and then I will move all the things in the kitchen over to the dining room so I can retexture and paint the kitchen. It is a slow process since we still need to use both areas while they are being painted. And throw in two birthdays, a baptism, school stuff, church stuff, sickness, and family events and well, it is a miracle it is even getting done at all!
Shane and I had a few different opinions as far as what all to change in the kitchen. We have most of them worked out. There is one that we are still divided on. Watch the video to see what we plan to do to the kitchen and what style element we still need to iron out.
I love the idea of adding back some of the vintage touches the previous owners took out when they gutted it and added new cabinets. I also love the idea of adding a few industrial touches like I did in my laundry room. And I am SUPER excited about my blue door! Remember the blue I chose for my card catalog table? I fell in love and wanted to use it more in my home.
Hopefully when it is all said and done it will look very similar to this mood board!
What does your dream kitchen look like? Vintage? Glam? All white? Dark and rich? I would love to hear!

I can't wait to see the transformation. Love the checked ceiling, how fabulous is that.

I like all the elements in your board, so I'm sure it will be terrific in the end. The thing with open shelving (I know from experience) is that everything in my kitchen gets a layer of grime on it (from cooking with no range hood) followed by layers of dust. A pain to clean periodically (and, I daresay, not often enough) All your dishes will stay cleaner if inside cabinets. It also looks a bit less cluttered. On the other hand, it's faster to reach and grab what you need from open shelving, and put it back. I know this is a stretch, but any chance of earthquakes where you are? Things could tumble off open shelves. BTW, love that shade of blue. Can't wait. (You don't want to know what my kitchen looks like--ancient IKEA, never quite finished, needs some inspiration--and smaller than yours!).

The dust is why I was so hesitant for so many years. And I am going to store the dishes away from the stove area because of the grease and grime from cooking. But I am willing to try it. I figure it doesn't hurt to give it a go :) We did have open shelving instead of cabinets in one of our apartments when we were younger and only had one child. I remember LOVING them. But memory can be rude. Maybe I only remember the good and I am forgetting the bad :P

Sounds like a fun project!
For such a small kitchen, I can see the pros & cons of removing the cabinets for open shelving (pros would be to open up space for more visual space, cons would having less hidden storage to hide bulky kitchen items). Have you considered a compromise and just removed the doors above the microwave for open shelving? I think you did a makeover like this, to your sister's house I believe? It looked AWESOME!.
Oh, and please, please, please have detailed instructions and/or videos how you're going to make the new cabinet doors. I have my master bathroom vanity I DESPERATELY want to update (inexpensively) and updating the doors & repainting would be the perfect solution! I even already have new hardware for it. :-)

Yes! The visually opening up the space is the main reason I want to do it. I made my case to Shane by drawing out each lower cabinet, each upper cabinet that we would keep, and the hallway pantry. I showed him where everything would go. Actually not many things would have to find new homes since the uppers we are taking down have mainly have bowls, plates, and glasses. And we have almost all white dishes. Mismatched mind you, but white :)
I am planning on having tutorials for everything along the way :)
