I used to have another blog all about birthday parties. But then this blog took off and then the domain of the birthday blog was stolen so I shut it down. And I decided to transfer the cake tutorials posts here :)
The Monkey Cake
My baby turned one today! It is hard to believe. We call him our little monkey so I made him a monkey cake. I painted a monkey on his bedroom wall and so I matched the cake to that.
I think they are pretty close :)
I started with 2 cupcakes and one round cake. After they cooled I put them in the freezer. Cakes are easier to carve if they are firm.
I cut small semi-circles out of the cupcakes so they would fig snugly against the “head”. I cut triangles out of the round cake to give him some cheeks.
After that I crumb coated it all in the dark chocolate frosting and put it back in the freezer. When the crumb coat has firmed up I frost the final layer of frosting. The cake is so cold that it makes the frosting almost hard. It makes it easy to smooth it out. For the detail I put frosting in a plastic sandwich bag and cut the corner off. I just squeezed and decorated.
My little guy wasn’t quite sure what to think about it!
