Cleaning really is a dirty word at our house. . . to my kids that is. I don’t know about you but I have a hard time getting my boys to want to clean. I have started setting the timer for 30 minutes. I tell them if they work really hard for that time, then when the timer goes off they can be done and do something fun. For some reason when they know there is a definite time limit, they work really hard. I also put on music. I have several CDs of silly songs that are up beat. They might not admit it, but we have a pretty good time (most of the time).
Another thing that we have are job charts. We have a little meeting where I list all the possible jobs and let them choose which ones they want for that month. Then when they complain I can say “You chose it”. By switching every month or so, they don’t get as bored with the jobs. If they can mark off every job every day for a week they get a small reward/treat. Summer time is always harder because our normal schedule is all out of whack, but it seems to work pretty well.
